Barb from BMdesigns at Benedict house is a designer who is busy – two parades this week and off to New Zealand next week. One of her textile based outfits has been chosen as a finalist in WOW, The World of Wearable Art international design competition in Wellington New Zealand. Barb takes her style from many areas in the history of both fashion and the textile arts; she relies not on current fashion trends but on quality and individuality. Her inspiration comes from the environment, its colour, texture and structure, the layers and regeneration of nature, the overlaying of tone and shadow.
Working as a custom designer she makes use of handmade textiles to fashion garments and accessories marketed with the individual in mind regardless of age or size.
Barbara says’ I feel it is important to carry on the textile arts and bring them into mainstream design work.’ Her studio at Benedict House is well worth a visit, she is also currently teaching textiles and creative headwear at Canberra Institute of Technology where she graduated in 2005 with a degree in Fashion Design.

My tip for the week is – get out your ‘old’ favorite music and play it ‘loudly’ when you are doing chores you don’t enjoy.

We saw ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ this week. Though my husband had to wake me a couple of times as I was snoring loudly – the film was long- and I had to watch all those intimate scenes with a strange man on one side – I really thought this was an excellent film. Directed by a female – it is very much from a female perspective.
The lucky newsletter voucher for this week goes to Marjo Jones. Must be collected from the bead shop by next Thursday 20th September 2007.
